Products to Avoid in Florida
While we won’t name specific brands to avoid, there are categories of exterior paint that consistently underperform in Florida’s climate. Contractor-grade and economy-grade paints with lower acrylic content and fewer performance additives fade and chalk faster, resist mildew less effectively, and require repainting sooner — often within three to five years. Oil-based and alkyd exterior paints, while durable in northern climates, tend to become brittle in Florida’s heat and can yellow, crack, and peel. Vinyl-acrylic blends are less durable and flexible than 100% acrylic formulations and should be avoided for exterior use in Tampa.
